EHO Story 📩
A fellow EHO shared this story with me recently, and I haven’t stopped thinking about it since.
They were interviewing the owner of a food business who had failed to act on a Hygiene Improvement Notice. Pretty standard interview procedure to ask, “Why didn’t you comply?”
And the business owner just said, completely matter-of-fact:
“Because you gave me a zero. It demotivated me.”
No excuses. No arguments. Just… gave up.
Now, for context, this was not a borderline case. The EHO described the scene as one of the worst they’d ever seen.
❌ Cooking happening unsafely outside
❌ Uncovered food everywhere
❌ Surfaces caked in grease
At one point, they said it felt like mouse droppings were the only thing missing.
But what really stuck with me was that answer: “Because you gave me a zero. It demotivated me.”
We often think people ignore food safety rules because they don’t care.
But sometimes, they’re just overwhelmed, embarrassed, or don’t know how to come back from a zero.
Food Safety Tip
A poor hygiene rating doesn’t have to be the end, it can be a turning point. But only if your team knows what to do next.
✔️ Keep morale in mind. A zero score can knock confidence. Lead with support, not blame.
✔️ Focus on learning. Nobody wants to feel like a failure. With the right knowledge and training, things are totally fixable (and even preventable).
✔️ Come up with an action plan. Even a messy kitchen can become manageable with a clear, step-by-step plan.
The Serious Lesson
If you or your team see a poor score as the end of the road rather than the start of a comeback, then something’s missing.
This isn’t about giving up. It’s about giving people the tools and mindset to recover and improve.
